Naim Uniti Core CD ripper / hard disk server
Significantly improved replacement for the popular UnitiServe!

I ran the old Naim UnitiServe for several years and it was very good, effortlessly producing the best sounding CD rips I have ever heard. However, it did have a couple of weaknesses - It was expensive, there was no Android App, the user interface was quite 'clunky' and (most significant of all) its operating system was burned onto it's hard drive, so any hard drive failure / problem meant a trip back to the Naim factory in Salisbury.

The new Uniti Core addresses all of those issues, because it is significantly less expensive than the old UnitiServe, can be controlled by excellent free Apps in both Android / iOS and has its operating system burned into its internal memory, completely separate from the hard drive. This last point is particularly important for two reasons. Firstly, if the hard drive on the Core ever fails, you can simply remove it in the same way you would with a PC and replace it, without the Core having to go back to Naim. (Of course you lose all the music you have ripped to the hard drive) but that shouldn't be as issue because the Core will have automatically backed up the music to your NAS drive. Secondly, having a hard drive that is easily replaced by the consumer means that he/she also has control over the size of hard drive that is put into the Core in the first place. In other words, the Core is shipped from Naim without a hard drive and the consumer decides what size to fit, depending on how much music storage is required. Compatible, inexpensive 1TB, 2TB, 3TB or 4TB hard drives are readily available from the likes of Amazon, so you just buy the size you want, then slot it in and away you go!

When you do fire it up, you quickly discover that the Uniti Core is a seriously powerful machine that will allow you to rip your entire CD collection, store up to 100,000 tracks, serve files to Uniti all-in-one players or other Naim streamers and create a back-up for all of your music. You can also use Uniti Core as a standalone digital source – simply connect it to a digital-to-analogue converter or an amplifier with digital inputs and control playback via the Naim App. Uniti Core is a fuss-free, no-compromise solution to ripping, storing, cataloguing and playing your entire music collection. The best just got a lot better!

All of which would be great, except for an unexpected ‘fly in the chardonnay', which is that shortly after the provisional launch details (including pricing) of the new Uniti range were announced by Naim, Sterling crashed and (since many of Uniti’s components come from abroad) the company had no option but to hurriedly schedule a 10% price rise for the Jan 2017. Not great news, because the new Uniti models won’t actually be available in the shops until AFTER that date, so therefore should carry the new, higher price tag. However, there is a (temporary) silver lining to this particular cloud, because Naim have said that they will honour the initial pre increase launch price for all customers who order new Uniti models BEFORE the increase takes effect, as a goodwill gesture in this difficult situation. So get your skates on, give us a £50 deposit and you'll be one of the first in the country to own this amazing new product, plus you'll have got it at the ‘old’ price and saved yourself a load of cash into the bargain!
